Oman updates type approval regulations: 4-year certificates, new labelling standards and revised fees

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of Oman updated its Type Approval regulations in August 2024. Key updates to the Type Approval process include:

Certificate Validity: Type Approval certificate validity has been revised to 4 years, replacing the previous indefinite validity. Certificates issued before August 2020 are now deemed invalid. Certificates issued prior to the regulation’s implementation will have their validity period start from the original issuance date. Renewals must be requested from the TRA before the certificate’s expiration and require payment of the relevant fees. Failure to renew will render the Type Approval certificate invalid.

Amendment Requests: An Amendment Request must now be submitted for existing Type Approval certificates under the following circumstances:

A change in the factory location.
A change in the brand or model name, provided the device’s nature remains unchanged.
The addition of a new feature to the device that does not alter its original appearance or nature.
Device Marking and Labelling: New guidelines have been introduced for device marking and labelling, including updated design and requirements.

Fee Adjustments: Changes have been made to the Type Approval fees for issuing new certificates and renewing existing ones.

Further guidance from the TRA is awaited regarding logistical details, including the handling of previously issued approvals and updated labelling requirements for products continuing to be supplied to the Omani market.
